See how we celebrated our 200th year

We marked this milestone throughout 2017 with special events recognizing customers and communities across our North American footprint.

Wishing it forward

To celebrate BMO’s 200th year, we introduced a new twist on an old idea: an interactive fountain where people could make digital wishes, large and small. Individuals and organizations simply chose a category, made a wish, and tossed a digital coin into the fountain to wish it forward. Wishes were made online or by visiting the BMO200 fountain at bank locations in Chicago, Montreal and Toronto. Smaller fountains also travelled to select branches and sponsored events across North America.

All year, we fulfilled wishes – large and small – made in the BMO200 Fountain. The Fountain captured the imagination of our customers, showcased our brand, and fulfilled our desire to say thank you, give back – and wish it forward.

Transformational donation

We honoured BMO’s long-standing legacy of contributing to ground-breaking medical research by making the biggest philanthropic commitment in our 200-year history, with a transformative gift to seven leading hospitals.

Commemorative tablet

On October 30, 2017, we unveiled a stunning commemorative tablet at our historic main branch in Montreal. The tablet is dedicated to the leaders who have guided BMO over the past 200 years. The occasion was marked by a tremendous sense of pride in our past and optimism for the future. Bill Downe and Darryl White were joined by Matthew Barrett and Tony Comper – past Chief Executive Officers of the bank – to sign a copy of BMO’s published history A Vision Greater than Themselves, which was placed in a BMO time capsule.

William A. Downe Scholarship program

To cap off the year-long celebration of our bicentennial, and to pay tribute to Bill Downe’s 10 years as CEO, we created the BMO200 William A. Downe Scholarship Program. The scholarship is named for Bill in recognition of his strong support of education and the development of the leaders of tomorrow. Starting in 2018 and for the next 10 years, BMO will provide a scholarship of $10,000 to 10 individuals applying for their entry year in any higher education program including universities, colleges and CEGEPs‎. The scholarship is open to all BMO Financial Group employees’ children and legal wards across all businesses and geographies around the world.

Bicentennial logo

We introduced a new logo to mark our 200th year. The BMO200 logo acknowledges ten generations of bankers who never wavered in their commitment to customers and is an expression of thanks to all the customers who have worked with and trusted us over the years. It is a symbol of our commitment to continue delivering on our vision to be the bank that defines great customer experience.
