Using code words in telegraph messages ensured that sensitive information would arrive safely under cover, and also saved money by using fewer words. For example, if you were to reference the Bank of Montreal codebook from 1887, you could convey “Panic in New York” with the word “Jerks,” or “Bank of England” with the word “Plodding.”
